• Selling your home and almost everything you own isn’t something you do overnight. It’s a process—one that’s equal parts exciting and overwhelming. For us, this is going to be the key to unlocking our freedom and adventure. My husband and I have been with each other for over 20 years and with 3 kids aged 11, 10 and 8, we have a lot, and I mean, A LOT, of stuff. It’s just stuff though. And we can’t take it to the grave with us. We know that all we really need is each other, and some essentials, of course. Here’s how we are going to make it happen.

Step 1: Declutter Like Never Before

We are going to start by asking ourselves one question: Do we really need this? Spoiler alert: most of the time, the answer will be no. From clothes we haven’t worn in years to kitchen gadgets collecting dust, we have realised just how much “stuff” we have been holding onto. We also need to involve the kid in this step. The kids will be able to choose what treasures they would like to hold onto.

Our rule: If it doesn’t serve a purpose or spark joy for our travels, it goes.

    Step 2: Sort, Sell, Donate

    We have created three categories:
Sell – Furniture, electronics, and anything with resale value.
Donate – Items in good condition that can help someone else.
Keep – Essentials for travel (and a few sentimental treasures).

We plan to use Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, and local buy/swap groups to sell quickly.

Step 3: Preparing the House for Sale

Decluttering will make the house look bigger and brighter—perfect for attracting buyers. This is a massive job that we have started but still have a lot to do. We have created a list of small things that need fixing, some painting and gardening. Gardening is the biggest job. With over 17 acres, a lot of work is to be done in this space, including planting some trees, an endless amount of weeding and slashing the paddocks. Below is our backyard, lot’s of work to do here!

    Step 4: Emotional Prep

This will be by far the hardest part. Letting go of a home filled with memories won’t be easy. But we need to remind ourselves: memories live in us, not in walls. What’s ahead—new experiences, new cultures, and time together—will be worth every goodbye.

    Step 5: The Freedom Ahead

Every item we get rid of, I know it will feel like shedding a layer of stress. Less stuff means less responsibility. Then, we will be free to roam, learn, and live without the weight of “things.”

Thinking about doing something similar? Follow our journey for tips, real talk, and inspiration as we trade possessions for experiences.

  • When we first started talking about selling our home and traveling the world, it felt like one of those wild ideas you throw around at the dinner table—fun to dream about, but not something we thought we’d actually do. Then, one day, it clicked: Why not us? Why not make this dream real?

So, we decided to go for it. The plan was simple: sell ASAP, pack up, and start our global adventure. We were ready to chase sunsets, explore new cultures, and live the dream we’d only ever imagined.

But life has a way of surprising you—in the best possible way.

Our daughter recently achieved something incredible: she made the representative netball team! This is a huge milestone and an opportunity we couldn’t imagine taking away from her. So, we adjusted our plans and thought, Okay, we’ll leave after the season ends in August 2026.

Then came another proud-parent moment: she was elected as a school leader for Year 6! Honestly, we couldn’t be more thrilled. Leadership is such an amazing experience, and we know how much this means to her. So, once again, we hit pause on our plans.

Instead of rushing, we’re embracing this season of life. Our new departure date? December 2026. It’s later than we originally planned, but it feels right. These achievements are part of her story—and ours—and we want her to enjoy every moment.

Do we feel a little impatient? Absolutely. The wanderlust is real! But we also feel grateful. Grateful that our kids are thriving, grateful that we can give them these experiences before we take on the biggest adventure of all. This extra year gives us time to plan better, save more, and dream bigger.

Sometimes, the road to your dreams takes a few unexpected turns. And that’s okay—because the journey starts long before you board the plane.

  • We’re a family of five, kids aged 7, 9, and 11, and we have decided to take the leap. After years of working full-time just to pay off a mortgage, we have realised something important: the big house, the big block, and all of the “stuff” inside is not making us happy. It is just… stuff.

For years, we have been living the way we thought we were supposed to, working hard, paying bills, and collecting things. But recently, it hit us: we are spending more time chasing money than making memories. Our beautiful home that many would dream of owning isn’t giving us joy, it’s holding us back.

We asked ourselves: What do we really want? The answer is simple, time together, experiences, and freedom.

We enter this world with nothing, and that’s exactly how we leave it. So why spend our lives accumulating things that don’t matter to us? Instead, we’re choosing to invest in what truly counts: family, adventure, and living in the moment.

Tomorrow isn’t promised, and we don’t want to wait for “someday.” So, we have made the decision to sell our home, downsize our lives, and take our kids on the ultimate adventure, exploring the world, learning from different cultures, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Freedom isn’t just about quitting the 9–5 grind. It’s about waking up excited, not exhausted. It’s about teaching our kids that happiness doesn’t come from things, it comes from experiences, connections, and living fully.

This journey is our leap into the unknown, and we couldn’t be more ready.

Follow along as we share the highs, lows, and everything in between. We’ll show you what it’s really like to trade comfort for adventure, and why it’s the best decision we’ve ever made.
